What online pleasures or gratifications does online news content offer?
One way in which audiences are pleasured is by the long-running chat boards and by conducting these allows people to interact with one-another and share ideas leading to an encouragement of debates and discussions talking about any topic in which people want to know more about and this may lead to the satisfactory of audiences using this method of online news content as they may like the though of sharing ideas with people to see what they have to say in order to change their opinions. Another way in which audiences feel satisfied by the factor of online news content is by the network of web blogs and by doing this would mean that audiences viewing the blog would generally be able to get the opinions of a specialist writer and the audience may feel as if this is very important opposed to reading an article which is more likely to either be biased or opinionated and by reading these blog posts would mean the they may get more fair, factual information even though it still may be an opinion, however, by the fact of it being written by a specialist may mean that this may lead to many more views by people leading to that certain institutions' sales and profits to increase overall.
Furthermore, by allowing audiences to leave comments upon any article can make audiences feel more powerful by creating an idea that they can be the reason to be 'challenging' the news institution's values which may allow them to engage within this method of online news content as people would feel more connected to a certain debate allowing them to get their views across towards how they feel.

Build the wall analysis

First, there is the familiar industrial dynamic in which leaders raised in one world are taken aback to find they have underestimated the power of an emerging paradigm.
Agree:Due to the fact that the internet is taking over and is underestimated as to powerful it can actually be and how not everyone within the newspaper industries notice this as he states an 'emerging paradigm' and how this may be disastrous within the near future.
- Section 1
The article is stating/comparing both forms of media of both the internet and newspapers. The discussion of how the newspaper costs money versus how the internet is free and how it is coming from a biased opinion at the start questioning them as to why they would charge money for that when people can simply go upon the internet and read for FREE.
- Section 2
This section is similar to the section above but instead states things such as how if digital technology can be accessed for free, why bother buying, old methods of news such as newspapers where the factor of 'price' is still involved. Also, the fact that more people are buying digital products compared to cheap newspapers effectively gives them a long term saving of money. On the other hand, if lots of people read The New York Times daily, then the need for digital technology.
- Section 3
This section presents to the audience that '10% of the existing 210,000 Baltimore Sum readers' for example, who pay a subscription rate less than half the price of home delivery, or roughly 10$ which would represent about $2.5m a year. Abscent the cost of trucks, gas, paper, presses, money like that represents the beginnings of a solid revenue stream having both positive and negative sides to this.
- Section 4 (For the industry, it is later than it should be…)
Within this section the journalist talks about both papers 'The Post' and 'The Times' and how they 'build that wall.' meaning how both of them represent newspapers and bring back its roots and what newspapers are all about. The discussion of there being a pay wall for these newspapers arose and also discussed how if the news is 'revolved around the cover state, sports and finance, this would generate enough revenue to maintain a slip and paid 'metro desk'.
Content matters. And you must find a way, in the brave new world of digitization, to make people pay for that content.
Disagree: I do not agree with this because I feel that the free online articles and online content may take over within the near future and if institutions continue offering a paywall for their newspapers/online articles then their target consumers may be forced to leave them and turn towards going to another newspaper.
Newspaper companies run a business, and businesses need to make money. They need to cut cost and/or find other revenue sources to stay in business. There are news websites that offer premium contents for paid subscription, such as Wall Street Journal. But a large percentage of the contents are free because there won't be enough visiting to generate any meaningful money through advertisements otherwise. In other words, free contents act as "search engine optimization" to bring in traffic from search engines as well as getting repeat visitors. Balancing the two (paid vs. free), with system in place to measure revenue and cost in real-time will separate the survivors and those headed for extinction.
Agree: I agree with this statement as although he states what the online/digital world is doing, he is also in favour for there being newspapers to be sold being a positive. Also, due to the free content, he states that this may lead to more people wanting to use this compared to having pay for the news papers which is something that people should think about and how newspapers and do something about this.

I believe that this biased discussion as to whatever the author was talking about was correct and meant that to a certain level as his discussion between both newspapers and the internet were valid. As a wise man once said 'The internet is the new world.' meaning that I agree with this argument because without internet, I believe that news would not spread as quickly as it would with newspapers and the television. Also, due to the convenience factor of everyone within today's society purchasing new and digital forums/ devices such as iPads, laptops, android phones etc as to where they can get this information off, which is a very big positive for the new generation of the world. However, on the other hand, this man also vouches for newspapers and believes that they can still be very resourceful as if the organisations work hard by being/ competing with these other media platforms then they can not die promptly.

How has news changed within the last 20 years
I believe that news has evolved within the past 20 years due to new and digital media. For example the internet has attracted a large target audience into looking at the news every single day. It has single-handedly taken over the amount of people watching TV.
Audiences have benefited the most due to this opposed to institutions as without them, there would be no sales within new gadgets such as iPads, smartphones etc. in order to access the internet into using new and digital media such as social networks in order to access the news.
On the other hand, institutions benefited from the change within news as more people were wanting to buy new gadgets in order to look-up news, the institutions would gain a raise in awareness and would ultimately lead to an increase in sales and profits due to this and more people buying newspapers or magazines for example, people purchasing apps for newspapers for The Guardian on their smartphones.

New and Digital media - end of unit question
What are the possible benefits and problems attached to the Internet?
The media constantly changes everyday and involved new and digital technology. For example, before technology such as computers, laptops, iPads, smartphones etc. came out, media such as newspapers and magazines would constantly be used and these were things that were important, however, due to this change, this encourage a lot more advertisement and allowed people to share more ideas amongst each other.
New technologies such as viewing articles online compared to reading them in newspapers changed a lot of things and allowed people to interact by commenting on the bottom of the articles starting biased wars as to what they believe in leading to technology to evolve quicker than ever. New and digital technology targeted all different types of target audiences ranging from adults to younger children drawing in a large target market being a stereotype linking to Perkin's theory of having some element of truth within each stereotype and the new and digital media, in this case, is usually known for attracting the younger generation of people.
One benefit attached to the media includes sharing views and ideologies of what people feel amongst one another by sharing things from many to many, one to many or many to one. By doing this not only gave people the opportunity to share ideas but also lead to a raise in awareness. For example, on YouTube, well known artists of today such as Justin Bieber's career started because of the use of new and digital media allowing him to be one of the most searched people upon the whole web.
One problem attached to the internet includes things such as institutional bias and this is where institutes allow their ideas to take over and to be well known so that they can share their views with more people getting them to believe in more things that the institutes believe in. For example, institutions such as Fox News are known for only showing one-sided stories; one impact of them doing this effected the voting within the US.'We find a significant effect of the introduction of Fox News on the vote share in Presidential elections between 1996 and 2000. Republicans gained 0.4 to 0.7 percentage points in the towns that broadcast Fox News.' -Being a potential downfall for the reputation for not only the internet but for the whole new and digital media. Linking to Pareto's Law of 80/20 showing that 80% of votes were due to the 20% of bias shown on television.
Overall and personally, my opinion is that the internet can be positive but can also cause problems depending on how people make use of it. The positives can be that more ideologies get across to people and opinions are shared in order to gain more awareness, however, on the other hand, negative things such as biased views also encourage more wars to take place such as political wars for example.

Pareto's law
1) What is Pareto's Law? Sum it up in a paragraph.
Pareto's law 'states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes'. For example, the law started off and was based off the idea of 80% of Italy being owned by 20% of the people. This law was so useful that it could be applied to computer science as for example, Microsoft noted that by fixing the top '20% most reported bugs, 80% of the errors and crashes would be eliminated.'
2) What other industries or examples can you apply the 80/20 rule to?
Microsoft - computer engineering
The business industries e.g.
3) List three arguments in FAVOUR of Pareto's Law applying to the internet:
Twitter owns vine
Google owns YouTube
Google owns Blogger
4) List three arguments AGAINST Pareto's Law applying to the internet:
Instagram - everyone is equal posting pictures as the instagram HQ do not have all access to everyone posting pictures.
FB - People are able to post things from one to many or many to many people
Twitter - Does not always control what people tweet like any other social network.
Finally, answer the following question:
5) Even if Pareto's Law applies to internet ownership, does it still apply to the content we read online?
Sometimes; maybe, idunno :(
